Nest belatedly came up with the solution, which is the Power Connector, but they're apparently reluctant to push it because that would be admitting they sold a faulty product to begin with. Running a C-wire is better, and allows using other smart thermostats besides Nest, but the reality is that in most homes, it's a complete pain in the ass to do.
