TL:DR ATT is a shady and corrupt company that will blacklist their own extenders unless you purchase them from them and pay the $7 a month fee. Also, the 4971 model is wifi 6, whereas the 4921 and older models are not. Not sure if that matters to OP.

They will run a fiber cable to where the gateway is located. Fiber cable is smaller than the coax used for Spectrum. Not much different than a regular cable or phone/DSL line install. Well, I have AT&T fiber and haven’t used a modem in decades. If your connection is like mine the fiber terminates in an ONT with Ethernet from that running into their gateway. You need that to provide you with your Internet address. I turned off Wi-Fi in the gateway and run my ethernet to my router, and that handles all of my devices.

I had ATT 1GIG a little over a year ago and I was paying $40. When I moved fiber was not available so I could not bring it. Today fiber is finally available, but the new price is $80!!! I was able to sign up for $70 via care, but wondering if the $10 combined is available + $15 military credit to bring it down to $45….Within a couple hours I had an appointment for Monday morning, and the guy showed up at 8:30 and had me working in 30 minutes. I’m far more satisfied with ATT fiber than any other service I’ve had. Also: never a hint of data caps and we stream everything plus I’m online for work all day. 1.
