In June 1994, at the request of US Senator from Kansas, Nancy Landon Kassebaum-Baker, the National Park Trust purchased the Spring Hill/Z Bar Ranch to assist in the creation of a national park. On November 12, 1996 the 10,894-acre Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve was created as the 370 th national park unit.
