Geologic eons

Eons are the largest intervals of geologic time and are hundreds of millions of years in duration. The Precambrian is an informal unit of geologic time, subdivided into three eons (Hadean, Archean, Proterozoic) of the geologic time scale. The Phanerozoic Eon is the most recent eon and began more than 500 million years ago.

The geologic clock gives geologists a way to map Earth's history. Through the study of land formations and fossils, they can put together the story of the planet. New discoveries can make drastic changes to the timeline.
